Michigan First Downtown Branch
Project Overview

Michigan First Downtown Branch fuses bold street art with iconic Detroit imagery across the branch's eight windows, each highlighting a different Detroit moment or symbol with brand logo elements and a hidden "first" subtly worked into every panel. The concept originated with an outside vendor, but once it became clear that producing it through them would run close to $40,000, marketing leadership asked whether the large-format illustrations could be brought in-house instead. The scale and visibility of the project were intimidating at first, but taking it on meant pairing illustration skills with real production knowledge of large-format graphics to execute it internally.

Some panels kept the vendor's original concepts; others were redesigned where feasibility or production made more sense. As a team, the idea was pushed further with Detroit-specific highlights and the hidden "first" detail in every panel. The automotive panel became a standout — a nod to Detroit's car history built around a classic Ford Mustang, in Ford blue, paired with a line illustration of the vehicle and a detailed taillight rendering. The Red Wings panel was another strong one, recreated from the original concept art using a mix of AI and Adobe Illustrator. Multiple tools and techniques went into the execution, with ongoing feedback from leadership along the way to keep it aligned with the original vision.

Beyond the cost savings, the branch became a visible proof of concept — its design language got reused as the visual foundation for later environmental work, including the Detroit Wallscapes campaign, extending the same illustration style from branch windows out into the city.
